What is demineralized water?
Demineralized water is water from which dissolved mineral salts have been removed. It is the base of the aqueous phase of most cosmetic formulas: emulsions, lotions, shampoos, gels and diluted hydrosols. Lotus Lab supplies it in bulk to professionals, in 10 liter lots.
Identification
INCI name: Aqua. CAS No. 7732-18-5, EC No. 231-791-2. Function: solvent, aqueous phase. Appearance: clear, colorless, odorless liquid.
What is demineralized water used for in formulation?
- Aqueous phase of creams, milks and lotions (oil-in-water emulsions)
- Base of shampoos, shower gels and liquid soaps
- Dilution of surfactants, actives and pH solutions
- Preparation of stock solutions (preservatives, water-soluble colorants)
How much should be used?
It completes the formula to 100% (q.s.). In a standard emulsion the aqueous phase usually represents 50 to 90% of the formula; in a shampoo, between 60 and 85%. The absence of dissolved salts limits the risk of incompatibility with ingredients sensitive to calcium and magnesium ions.
Handling precautions
Water alone is not preserved: every aqueous formula requires a suitable preservative system. Keep the container closed, away from light and heat, and use clean containers to avoid contamination.
