What is SLES?
SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) is a synthetic anionic surfactant widely used in rinse-off cleansing products. The “N70” grade commonly designates a viscous paste with about 70% active matter. Lotus Lab supplies it in bulk to professionals, in 2 kg lots.
Identification
INCI name: Sodium Laureth Sulfate. CAS No. 68585-34-2, EC No. 500-234-8. Function: cleansing agent, foaming agent. Family: alkyl ether sulfate. Appearance: viscous paste, colorless to pale yellow.
What is SLES used for in formulation?
- Main surfactant of shampoos, shower gels, bubble baths and liquid soaps
- High foaming and cleansing power, including in hard water
- Dilutes in water and thickens with added salt (sodium chloride)
- Combined with an amphoteric co-surfactant such as CAPB to adjust foam, viscosity and mildness
What dose should be used?
In shampoos and shower gels, the 70% paste is commonly used at 10 to 25% of the formula, adjusted to the target active matter and the associated co-surfactant. Dilute the paste in part of the warm water of the formula before adding the other ingredients, stirring gently to limit foaming.
Handling precautions
The concentrated paste is irritating to the skin and can cause serious eye damage: wear gloves and goggles, never apply it neat to the skin, rinse abundantly after any splash. Finished formulas must be tested and validated by the formulator. Store at room temperature, container closed.
