What is citric acid?
Citric acid is an organic acid found naturally in citrus fruits and produced industrially by fermentation. In cosmetics it is mainly used to adjust the pH of formulas. Lotus Lab supplies it in bulk to professionals, in 2 kg lots.
Identification
INCI name: Citric Acid. CAS No. 77-92-9 (anhydrous form), EC No. 201-069-1. Function: pH adjuster, chelating agent. Usual appearance: white crystals or powder, highly soluble in water.
What is citric acid used for in formulation?
- Lowers the pH of shampoos, shower gels, liquid soaps and lotions
- Adjusts alkaline formulas into the target pH range
- Secondary chelating agent, alongside EDTA
- Used in the preparation of buffer solutions
What dose should be used?
The dose depends on the formula, often around 0.05 to 1%. Dissolve the acid in a little water, add it gradually at the end of manufacturing and check the pH with a pH meter after each addition.
Handling precautions
The powder is irritating to the eyes: wear gloves and goggles, avoid inhaling dust. Store in a dry place, in a closed container.
