What is CAPB?
CAPB (Cocamidopropyl Betaine) is an amphoteric surfactant derived from coconut oil, sold as an aqueous solution. It is used as a co-surfactant in cleansing products. Common market grades contain about 30% active matter. Lotus Lab supplies it in bulk to professionals, in 2 liter lots.
Identification
INCI name: Cocamidopropyl Betaine. CAS No. 61789-40-0, EC No. 263-058-8. Function: co-surfactant, foaming agent, viscosity control agent. Appearance: viscous liquid, colorless to pale yellow.
What is CAPB used for in formulation?
- Co-surfactant in shampoos, shower gels, facial cleansers and liquid soaps
- Stabilizes and enriches the foam produced by anionic surfactants such as SLES
- Helps thicken the formula, with added salt
- Mixes easily at room temperature with most surfactants
What dose should be used?
It is commonly used at 3 to 10% of the formula, together with a main surfactant. The exact dose depends on the active matter content, the target viscosity and the expected foam: every formula must be validated through laboratory trials.
Handling precautions
May irritate the eyes and skin in concentrated form: wear gloves and goggles, rinse abundantly after contact. Protect from frost and heat, container closed.
