What is EDTA?
EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) is a chelating agent: it binds metal ions present in water and raw materials, such as calcium, magnesium, iron or copper. Lotus Lab supplies it in bulk to professionals, in 2 kg lots.
Identification
Function: chelating (sequestering) agent, formula stabilizer. Family: aminopolycarboxylic acid. Usual appearance: white crystalline powder, soluble in water.
What is EDTA used for in formulation?
- Limits the action of metal ions that alter color and fragrance
- Helps keep shampoos, gels and liquid soaps clear in hard water
- Supports the efficacy of a preservative system
- Stabilizes formulas sensitive to metal-catalyzed oxidation
What dose should be used?
Common doses range from 0.05 to 0.2% of the formula. Dissolve the powder in the aqueous phase before adding the other ingredients, then check the pH and the stability of the finished formula.
Handling precautions
The fine powder may irritate the eyes and respiratory tract: avoid inhaling dust, wear gloves and goggles. Store in a closed container, in a dry place.
